He has been a prolific public speaker in venues worldwide, both for private organizations and for government groups and has been interviewed by most major media organizations, both in the U.S. and abroad. He has written several published articles on how organizations can protect themselves against terrorism.

Background
Alan recently retired as the Vice President of Global Safety and Security for Marriott International where he served for 35 years. Marriott is the largest hotel company in the world with operations in 130 countries. In his capacity, he created Marriott’s crisis management and security programs for all of the international properties.

As Marriott began moving into high risk areas and hotels became targeted by terrorist organizations, Alan created and implemented Marriott’s “threat condition program”, hardening hotels to deter or mitigate terrorist attacks. He co-founded the Hotel Security Working Group, an organization within the U.S. State Department’s Overseas Advisory Council, comprised of hotel corporate security directors, to ensure the hotel industry collaborated on security issues.

In 2009, Alan was a guest in the Ritz Carlton hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia when the hotel, along with the JW Marriott hotel, was attacked by terrorists. Alan led the crisis management efforts, ensuring an effective recovery.

Following the Mumbai terror attacks, Alan testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security in January 2009 and later testified before the House Committee on Homeland Security in 2016.
